Nintendo teaches the media a lesson for listening to Direct leaks and it’s just magnificent

As I’m sure you’re aware, it was heavily rumoured over the last couple of weeks that Nintendo was going to hold a Direct earlier this morning. Evidently, this rumour didn’t prove true and Nintendo had a little fun of its own riling up its fans during the wait.

These are my favourite sorts of stories to report on. Yes, I know it’s disappointing that there’s no Direct news yet, but the internet’s reaction is what kept me stuck to my screen last night.

Around about 4:30 PM (GMT) yesterday evening, a few images went around Twitter showing off a hastily deleted Tweet from Gamestop, a couple of secret videos, and my personal favourite: an empty space on the Direct listing that was totally NOT due to an odd number.

This period of wildness went on for about two hours as Nintendo Direct trended, Tweets were tweeted, and a lot of media outlets and sources got involved in having fun with the hype, including IGN, GameSpot, Sonic, Doom, Mega Man, Assassin’s Creed, Nibel, us here at Pocket Gamer, and much more.

If the sinking, settling feeling of realisation wasn’t the best thing about this whole play, it was watching the internet’s reaction once Nintendo America released the picture above.

Between memes, anger, frustration, hilarity, respect, and the general ‘AWWW YOU’ siege of GIFs, I think it’s safe to say that Nintendo trolled us hard and we’re not even mad about it.
