If you’re a fan of first-person shooters then get trigger happy in Combat Squad

Combat Squad comes courtesy of the ex-developers of Counter Strike Online, A-33 Studio. And yes, this CS is a little like that CS. There’s a lot of running and gunning around abandoned buildings, pumping bullets into enemies and decorating walls with decals in the process. If that’s your idea of FPS heaven, this mobile shooter should suit you nicely.

During gameplay, you’re in control of five tough cookies, mercenaries armed to the teeth and baying for the blood of other players. You can select from several characters when you assemble your squad: skull-faced Edwin, colourful Erica, hirsute Hugo, Navy SEAL Jessie, cocky Kyle, dapper Markus, living legend Robin and a fella named Sergei. Each has specialties such as long-range killing or full-frontal assault, and can be tweaked by equipping a range of perks, so you can tailor your team to fit your play style. The Dive system means you can swap between each of your mercs mid-game, with the AI taking the reigns of the rest of your soldiers whilst following your tactical orders.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to hog the limelight in a one-on-one battle, you can give the AI a rest and join up with other players for a five-versus-five slugfest. In total, there are seven multiplayer game scenarios in Combat Squad to pick from, including Demolition, Annihilation, Zombie and Deathmatch, taking place across seven international locations stretching from Europe to Central Asia.

Controls are straightforward enough, and will be familiar to you if you’re a veteran of mobile FPS. You use the left stick to move, the right to look around. A middle button can be used to shoot manually, although the finger yoga required might make using the auto-fire option preferable.

If the release of Combat Squad: Project Wednesday passed you by earlier in the year, you can snap it up free on Android or iOS now.
