Developer of Five Nights at Freddy’s might be delaying the next instalment because it’s ‘too scary’

Halloween is on its way and you know what that means – time to turn the lights down low and dust off your scary films and games. One thing we weren’t expecting to read about was that Scott Cawthon (Five Nights at Freddy’s) might be delaying his newest game Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location.

Why? You ask. Because he thinks it might be too scary.

To recap, in case you missed the fad, FNAF is a strategic horror in which you take up the night security position at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. It’s an easy job, no doubt, but the catch is that the mechanical characters come to life and try to kill you. By using monitors, closing doors, hiding mechanisms, torches, and more you have to try and survive until 6 am.

It could be a joke, but Cawthon’s update post on Steam says otherwise as he battles with the game’s darkest areas. “There are certain plot elements that are very dark, to the point where I sometimes feel sick.” By no means have I ever thought of FNAF as ‘kid-friendly’ but looking at the whole picture there’s never been any visual gore or anything I’d class as inappropriate. The question is: how far has Cawthon gone to provide that reaction?

It’s up to Cawthon and it’s up to the fans, but we’re all on a pretty similar level in thinking that FNAF isn’t supposed to be kid friendly. Hell, some bits are so scary that I almost broke my toe kicking out at the table, and that’s the way we love it.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location is slated to release on October 7th on Steam. We’re not entirely sure whether that extends to the mobile release of the game just yet, but we’ll keep you updated whatever happens.
